FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Minneapolis, MN (December 20th, 2024): Pre-College Development Academy Statement on NCAA Eligibility
The Pre-College Development Academy (PCDA) is aware of the recent social media discussions surrounding Diego Pavia’s eligibility at Vanderbilt University. While we cannot comment on ongoing legal matters, we encourage families of prospective collegiate athletes to exercise patience and allow due process to unfold.
Importance of Eligibility Understanding
It’s crucial for families to understand that the NCAA bylaws regarding junior college eligibility and its impact on overall playing time remain unchanged. Student-athletes continue to receive four years of eligibility with the option of a fifth “redshirt” year. This current court case is specific to Mr. Pavia and does not set a broader precedent.
PCDA: Anticipating and Advocating for Change
PCDA actively advocates for beneficial modifications to NCAA eligibility rules, particularly for soccer players. Recognizing the need for additional development time, PCDA’s 2021 model specifically addresses preserving eligibility.
Current Gap Year Limitations and PCDA’s National Soccer League
The NCAA currently grants soccer players a one-year post-high school grace period, often referred to as a “gap year.” PCDA National Soccer League (PCDASoccer.com) aims to replicate the model of sports like hockey. In hockey, high school graduates receive a three-year grace period before their eligibility begins. This extended timeframe allows for more focused development without impacting collegiate eligibility.
PCDA’s Continued Advocacy for Eligibility Extension
PCDA strongly advocates for a minimum two-year grace period after high school for soccer players. This extension would provide American athletes with additional time to develop physically and technically, allowing them to compete more effectively against older players entering the system from Europe and the transfer portal.

Our experienced staff equips PCDA student-athletes with the tools to navigate eligibility preservation effectively. By following our guidance, athletes can graduate PCDA as academic juniors but maintain athletic freshman status with remaining eligibility for graduate school.
